Sep. 25, 2018 - Reduce stress and achieve mind-body-spirit wellness through a six-week (Sept. 25–Oct. 30) workshop on Tai Chi and Qigong with Gerry Hopkins at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha). Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art that is most often practiced as a gentle form of exercise and mindful meditation. Qigong consists of a variety of Chinese therapeutic exercises that have been around for at least 2,500 years. Qigong looks like Tai Chi but is generally easier to do. Tai Chi and QiGong can help you improve balance and coordination, increase flexibility, strengthen core and lower body muscles, and control stress. There is compelling evidence that they can strengthen the immune system and improve cardiovascular health, too. In this four-week series, you will be introduced to foundational principles of both Tai Chi and Qigong, along with some basic movements. Gerry Hopkins has been practicing martial arts for 31 years and focusing on Chinese martial arts and Qigong for the past 20 years. Gerry also teaches at the Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center and the Mercy Health Plaza YMCAs. The cost is $65 for the six-week series.
